Karen La Du was born in New Jersey and now lives and works in Washington, DC. She received her BA (French and Fine Arts), from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL and MFA, Ed. from Kean University, Union, NJ. In addition to pursuing her personal art expression, La Du has taught in a diversity of settings from private, public, parochial schools, museum education departments, to community centers and her home studio. She has written a book of curricula for students of all ages, Looking at Art in a Modern Way (2000) and designed a comprehensive program for classrooms and workshops that unites the teaching of yoga poses with the study and production of fine art, Yoga: Art in Motion (2005).
One of her travels inspired another book: The Doors of Marfa, TX: Coloring Pages (2014).
Visual artist, designer, and educator; La Du honors personal memories in her work. The visual symbolization of people, places, experiences and material things influential to her life are presented to the viewer, often with text; sometimes coherent, other times enigmatic. Color takes center stage however, above the subject matter in her vibrant multi-layered paintings, prints, and works on paper. She has exhibited art and presented workshops throughout NY, NJ and PA since 1983.
